This week-long course includes a combination of lecture sessions by researchers at the SPD Foundation and mentored clinical experiences at STAR (Sensory Therapies And Research) Center. Participants are paired with experienced STAR therapist throughout the program and have an opportunity to observe children in direct therapy using combined occupational therapy and listening therapy. Active mentoring occurs before, during, and after treatment sessions. Group processing/supervision guided by Dr. Lucy Jane Miller and Dr. Sarah Schoen occurs each day after treatment sessions. Supervision focuses on clinical reasoning, problem solving, constructive feedback, and note writing, with an emphasis on clinical reasoning. Intervention clinical reasoning tools developed by Dr. Miller are used to teach intervention and report writing. Participants are also trained on and exposed to the newest assessment tools. Upon completion of Level 1, participants are expected to practice and be proficient in administration, scoring, and interpretation of these scales to receive competency credential.
Two parent-report measures, two norm-referenced standardized measures, and one outcome measure, sensitive and appropriate for all settings, are taught. The assessments are:
Sensory Measures
- The SPD checklists (Schoen & Miller)
- The Sensory Processing Measure (Parham & Ecker; Kuhanek, Henry and Glennon)
Functional and Neuro-maturational measures
- The Miller Function and Participation Scales (M-Fun) and/or
- Miller Assessment for Preschoolers (MAP)
Outcome measures
Participants who demonstrate proficiency in clinical reasoning during intervention and proficient planning and note-writing and who reliably administer and score two standardized tests are awarded a Level 1 Competency Credential in SPD from the SPD Foundation and 37 hours of AOTA Continuing Education credit.
